Lincoln will be home to its own 24 Hour Comics Day at the Hi-Way Diner at 2105 Highway 2.
Check out 24hourcomicslincoln.com for more information on the gig, and 24hourcomics.com for more on the challenge itself (and maybe a venue where you are if you're not in Lincoln). |

Friday night at the downtown YMCA, there's a concert that will include students from Lefler Middle School who have participated in the School of Rock after school program through the YMCA. All of these kids are in middle school, and many of them never played an instrument before they joined the club.
These groups are good for cover bands, and amazing for cover bands consisting entirely of people aged 11 to 14. Each band will perform a few songs, and the show will be headlined by a performance from club leader Nick's band, the JV Allstars.
Most importantly, the kids set this gig up. So it's $3 for admission, and if they manage to cover their expenses, these kids will actually make a buck or two on their first open-to-the-public gig.
So come. It's one of those feel-good, yet be very impressed, types of things.
Doors at 6:30, show at 7. Downtown YMCA. |

I'm considering driving down to Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, leaving either early Friday or Friday after work, and trying to track down a pack of high school superheroes that are in town from Eugene, Oregon. I'll probably stay 2-3 days down there and be back by the end of Tuesday.
I'm looking for anyone who might like to come along and help me. I'll be shooting footage for my documentary, so ideally, I'd like someone who has experience using a video camera and either has a video camera or has access to one. We'll basically both spend the days shooting different stuff. I just don't want to get into a situation like that and not be able to document everything.
I'll pay for gas and lodging and fast food meals. I guess the only real requirements are that you can be gone those days and that you can handle 16 hours in a car each way and that you won't flake out on me. |

okay everybody, this is a little bit of documentary work, but did any of you
1. want to grow up to be a superhero when you were a kid
and / or
2. dress up as a superhero for Halloween one year AND have pictures to prove it?
If so, I'd like to scan your photos and interview you on camera. Please reply.

In the wee hours of this morning, well actually yesterday morning now that it's past midnight, I went to the north 27th street Wal-Mart, needing some blank DV tapes but hoping to find a softcover edition of Harry Potter 5. They didn't have it, so since it was nice out and I was awake, I decided to wrap around the east side of town and hit the 87th and Hwy 2 Wal-Mart to check out their supply. ( Read more... )

Got on a plane in Chicago today. I had seat 17F (window), Sara had 17E (middle). We got to row 17 to find a man chattering away on his cel phone in seat 17F. I figured, "He's just the guy who's supposed to be in 17D, only he wanted to sit by the window. Not a problem, but I still need to check."
So I ask, "Are you supposed to be in 17D?" He hears me enough to say no, he's 17F, and flashes his boarding pass stub. Sara suggests we just sit in E and D, but I figured the person who was actually supposed to be in 17D would probably be on their way soon. Sure enough, she was right there. So we had four people wanting three seats.
We pressed the attendant button and I got out of the way. She needed to take both of our 17F boarding pass stubs and call up to the desk to see what was going on. She came back right away and said, "Okay, you can't both be him --"
"Which one of you is the REAL Neal Obermeyer?" ( Read more... )

| » Something I learned in class today |
I asked the kids to come up with some story ideas that would be of interest to their fellow students. One sixth grader suggested doing a story about how if we ever have a Democrat for a president, this Democrat president will let the UN invade the United States and they will take away all of our constitutional freedoms.
